Hair Loss
Causes of hair loss are varied, and of course treatments are specific to the type of hair loss. There are several types of hair loss. Androgenetic Alopecia (Male Pattern Baldness / Female Pattern Baldness) accounts for 95% of all hair loss. Alopecia Areata is thought to be an auto-immune disease of the hair, initially appearing as a rounded bare patch about an inch across. In Telogen effluvium, a sudden or stressful event can cause the hair follicles to prematurely stop growing and enter into a resting phase.
The hair will then stay in the resting phase for about 3 months after which time a large amount of hair will be shed. Other forms of hair loss include Anagen Effluvium, Traction Alopecia, Scarring Alopecia, and other types of hair loss. In many instances, hair loss is multifactorial. Sclerotherapy
Sclerotherapy is the standard treatment for varicose and spider veins. A special sclerosing solution is injected into the diseased vein, which then collapses and is gradually absorbed by the body. By the end of the treatment program, the veins are less visible on the skin surface. Sclerotherapy usually also relieves symptoms associated with enlarged veins and prevents further complications.
Mohs Micrographic Surgery
Mohs surgery involves the systematic removal and analysis of thin layers of skin at the tumor site until the last traces of cancerous tissue have been eliminated. The immediate and complete microscopic examination and evaluation of excised tissue is what differentiates Mohs surgery from other cancer removal procedures. Only cancerous tissue is removed, minimizing both post-operative wound size and the chance of regrowth.
Mohs surgery is most commonly used for basal and squamous cell carcinomas, although it can be recommended for the eradication of other cancers such as melanoma. High precision makes Mohs surgery ideal for the elimination of cancers in cosmetically important areas such as the face (nose, eyelids, lips, hairline), hands, feet and genitals.
Photodynamic Therapy
Photodynamic therapy (PDT) uses light and a light-sensitive dye to treat cancer and other diseases. It is also being tested for the treatment of bacterial infection and skin conditions such as psoriasis. During the procedure, a photosensitized dye or drug is injected into the problem area, which is then exposed to pulses of a narrow-wavelength beam of light. The dye absorbs this light and produces an active form of oxygen that aids in the destruction of the tumor. PDT ensures high precision by targeting only the tissue in and near the treatment area.
IPL
Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) technology uses high-energy pulses of light to provide long-lasting results. IPL skin resurfacing, collagen stimulation, vein therapy and photoepilation improve skin texture and appearance and remove hair from any area of the body without damaging nearby tissue. Hair, veins or pigmented regions on the skin surface selectively absorb the pulses of light, shrinking or fading after treatment; collagen tightens, smoothing the skin. Patients can return to work and all regular activities immediately after the procedure. Skin appearance should improve soon after treatment. Hair loss is immediate and long-lasting. Several treatments may be desired for optimal results.
